NAMI, a small village in GEUMSAN County, South Korea, is the first place that ginseng was cultivated. In the village, a story has come down about a man whose name was Kang and who lived about 1,500 years ago. He lost his father at an early age, and moreover his mother had kept to her sickbed. Then, he entered a cavern in a mountain and began to pray that her mother would get well. One day, a guardian god appeared in his dream and ordered him to take a plant with three red berries on a red rock in that mountain and decoct it for his mother. After awaking from the dream, he went to the red rock. Then, he found a plant with three red berries. He dug it up, decocted it, and gave it his mother. Her illness was healed up. Kang planted its seeds in that village and became the first to succeed in artificial cultivation of ginseng. The name 'ginseng' means a human-shaped herb.
